Message from the Chairperson Welcome to the website of the Tanzania Tobacco Control Forum (TTCF). Tanzania Tobacco Control Forum is a coalition of individuals and agencies with members from government departments, NGOs, academic, public and private institutions, MPs and other stakeholders. The mission of the Forum is to bring together tobacco control activists from all walks of life, to advocate for and implement the best practices on tobacco control policies. Since its inception, TTCF has grown from the original 20 Founder Members to the current, about 300 members countrywide; with a network of 22 partner organisations. TTCF acquired a permanent office in January 2009, along Sam Nujoma/Igesa Road, opposite Kobil Petrol Station, Dar es Salaam. Within three years of its existence, TTCF has succeeded in getting tobacco control onto and up the public and political agenda. Together with its partners and with the support of the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare and WHO, TTCF enhanced the ratification of the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC); revision of the Tobacco Products (Regulation Act) 2003; preparation of the National Tobacco Control Strategy and currently, working towards a Campaign for a Smoke-free Dar es Salaam; to mention but a few. It is our hope that, the on-going tobacco control programmes, will help to raise public awareness on the hazards of tobacco and enable the government to enact effective tobacco control policies. May I take this opportunity to thank all our donors for the support, that enabled TTCF to stand this high, including:
Framework Convention Alliance American Cancer Society WHO Country Office Tanzania Airport Authority Tanzania Public Health Association IOGT-NTO Movement Bloomberg Global Initiative to Reduce Tobacco Use, through the Tobacco Free Kids Action Fund International Labour Rights Forum – Washington DC International Development Research Centre (IDRC) - Canada We also thank all our members, for their dedication and tireless efforts, without which these successes would not have been achieved.
Last but not least, we thank the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare (MHSW), in particular our Patron Hon Prof David Mwakyusa, for the moral support and encouragement that has indeed enabled TTCF to grow to its current level.
